Joris R. Vermeesch, Ph.D.
Prof. Joris Vermeesch, Ph.D., is Professor of Molecular Cytogenetics and Genome Research at KU Leuven, Belgium. He is also chair of the Department of Human Genetics and heads the Constitutional Cytogenetics unit at the Center of Human Genetics.
The laboratory he worked in was a pioneer in single cell array development and massive parallel sequencing applications in preimplantation, prenatal and postnatal diagnosis. In addition, by using clinical samples as input, the laboratory studies the mechanisms underlying chromosomal instability and rearrangements, and the causes of developmental disorders. A major focus of the laboratory is on translating novel approaches for non-invasive prenatal and cancer testing. The group is partner of the SymbioSys, the systems biology center of excellence in computational biology. Prof. Vermeesch has published over 350 papers with an H-index 52 and he was the founder of Cartagenia, a company focused on genomic data interpretation.
